The mind behind Morgan Mattson Ceramics
I grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania called Red Lion. That’s where I learned I was interested in art, painting in my free time. By the time senior year rolled around I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my life. I took some art classes my senior year that solidified my next decision; that I wanted to teach art.
So I went up to Penn State University, learned a lot, and more importantly took a ceramic class. Brooks Oliver was my teacher and wanted to convert me from teacher to artist. So I became invested. I took more classes, learned from the incredible Chris Staley and Liz Quakenbush and fell in love with functional pottery. After my four years were up, I reluctantly graduated and left my home of four years to travel south and find a teaching job.
My then boyfriend and now husband, Jesse, was living in Greenville, South Carolina and raving about it. So I packed up my life, went through some interviews, and took my first teaching position at Greenville High School. Unfortunately it wasn’t teaching ceramics but instead something that I knew very little about, digital media arts. I lost countless hours that year creating lessons, trying to tread water, and striving to show up to work on time. Probably the roughest year of my life, but it lead to the option two years later of me starting a ceramics program from scratch at Greenville High. Currently I teach both digital art and ceramics. This year I was looking to get back to what makes my heart the happiest and I landed, unsurprisingly, on starting my own ceramics business. I’m glad that you could be here for my journey and I can’t wait to share it with you.
